Would you like to take up a new hobby and get a basic grounding in botany? If so, there are still a few places left on a course being run by the Somerset Botany Group.
Join our workshops starting in April
The course will run from April to October, with a workshop on the third Wednesday of each month, starting on April 18 at the Trust’s Callow Rock offices, near Cheddar.
Each workshop starts at 10:15am with an indoor session which will be followed by an afternoon field session to study local plants. You will be able to learn about basic plant structure and forms, plant identification keys and get an introduction to the main plant families.
Learn about woodland, grassland and wetland plants
We will use three venues to allow you to look at different floral communities: Callow Rock offices near Cheddar for woodland plants; the East Barn at Chancellor's Farm, Priddy for limestone grassland plants; and the Avalon Marshes Centre at Westhay for wetland plants.
The Somerset Botany Group has been conducting botanical surveys in the county for well over 20 years. We carry out surveys to monitor the effects of management on Trust reserves, on potential reserves, and on reserves owned by other conservation bodies. Once you’ve done the course, perhaps you would like to come and help too.
